How Apple is killing Nintendo and Sony on the mobile market
20 Jun 2010 - apple, ios, ipod, ipod touch

Ok, maybe the title is a bit over the top, and this is completely anecdotal, but still. A few months ago we were in the Canary Islands on a week's vacation. Wonderful holiday! But unfortunately, we were robbed. Someone broke into the hotel room and stole all our mobile stuff except our mobile phones we had with us. But there were two Nintendo DS, two PlayStation Portable and two iPod Nanos.
Typical! But the police were notified on the spot and all the paperwork was done for the insurance companies back at home. And once we got the money I went to local electronics store to rebuy what was stolen. The money we got out of the insurance, of course, was not enough to replace everything straight off, but my idea was that instead of the children having new iPod nanos, they would each get one iPod touch. And so I bought a Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable instead of two of each.
Now I am ready to sell them, however, for they have no function in our home. I was already hesitant to re-acquire them, but still chose to do it since we have a lot of games for them. But our children never use them, and why should they? The iPod touch is nicer, faster, has better screen, and tens of thousands more games (although a lot of them are bad - but, unfortunately, the PSP and DS has that problem as well)
I ought to have foreseen this, of course. There is of course a lot of gaming licenses that will not reach iOS as long as the PSP and the DS exist as platforms, such as Super Mario and God of War (I guess). And I'm not going to say that the iPod touch has as good game controls as the dedicated units, that would be ridiculous. Playing God of War on PSP works amazingly well, and would not be the same on an iPod touch.
But there are plenty of good games for the iPod touch, and they're a lot cheaper! Even the games that exists in the PlayStation Store is cheaper for the iPod. And with one iPad in the family, we also have mobile games for a larger screen to play with.
So who needs the DS and PSP?
